What We Do In the Castle: Mel Brooks is Close to Getting ‘Very Young Frankenstein’ Pilot Order from FX

20th Television seems close to giving Mel Brooks another chance to “Put on the Ritz” by creating a series based on his classic comedy Young Frankenstein.
Deadline reports that the iconic director is close to getting a pilot deal for Very Young Frankenstein, a prequel series set before the 1974 comedy about a modern-day Dr. Frankenstein (pronounced Fronkensteen, of course.) The series would air on FX and probably stream on Hulu.
In addition to Brooks, the production team includes Taika Waititi, Garret Basch and Stefani Robinson, the creative team behind the FX series What We Do in the Shadows, which was based on the film of the same name. Robinson will serve as writer and showrunner on the series and Waititi will direct.
Although 20th and FX reps have declined to comment, the odds of this happening are good as another of Brooks’ iconic productions is getting the sequel treatment. Earlier this month, Amazon MGM Studios announced a 2027 release date for a Spaceballs sequel that would star Brooks and original cast members Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga and Rick Moranis.
Young Frankenstein scored big at the box office back in 1974. The movie, released in black and white, followed Dr. Frederick Frankenstein who traveled to Transylvania after inheriting the castle previously occupied by his grandfather, the Victor Frankenstein of legend. Frederick, with the help of his assistants Igor (Marty Feldman), Inga (Teri Garr) and Frau Blücher (Cloris Leachman), attempting to bring a dead body back to life and keep his monstrous creation (Peter Boyle) safe from the local townspeople. (And the townspeople safe from the monster.)
The team behind What We Do in the Shadows, a 2014 mockumentary starring Jemaine Clement and Waititi would be a natural fit for this project. The series of the same name, headlined by Matt Berry, which followed a house full of vampires living together in Staten Island, ran for six seasons on FX and racked up more than two dozen Emmy nominations, including three nods for best comedy series.
