Author Andy Weir is sending another protagonist on a lonely and dangerous mission in outer space, this time in the film Project Hail Mary, produced by Amazon Studios.

Ryan Gosling takes over for The Martian‘s Matt Damon as the spaceman risking it all, this time to save all of humanity. He plays middle school teacher Ryland Grace, who is selected to man a solo space mission to a distant star – the only one in the observable universe that is not dying.

Ryland’s protests that he’s “not an astronaut” don’t sway his handler, Eva Stratt, as our sun is also threatening to stop shining, meaning the end of life on Earth. Ryland, who has a Doctorate in molecular biology, has the right stuff to take that rocket 11.9 light years to a distant galaxy and discover out why that one star is thriving – and they’re not above putting him in a coma to get the reluctant spaceman to take that one giant leap for mankind.

Ryland comes to on the rocket sporting a case of amnesia, and must remember who he is and why he’s there – all while alone.

“I’m several light-years from my apartment,” he complains over the comms, “and I’m not an astronaut!”

The trailer has spoilers-a-plenty, so be warned, unless you want to know one of the mysteries that Ryland discovers out in space.

Project Hail Mary is based on Weir’s novel of the same name. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the minds behind Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse direct from a script adapted by Drew Goddard. Lionel Boyce and Ken Leung also star.

Project Hail Mary will begin orbiting theaters on March 20th, 2026.
