The Romantasy series that includes the books Fourth Wing, Iron Flame and Onyx Storm is still happening as of this article’s publishing date, even though the project is now in between showrunners.

It’s not necessarily a bad thing that after being tapped to write the script for the adaptation and being tapped as showrunner, Moira Walley-Beckett has stepped down from that position, as WandaVision and Agatha All Along creator Jac Schaeffer is thisclose to being signed to take her place, according to inside sources.

According to Deadline, Schaeffer has signed a deal with the studio and is also in discussions to board the high-profile romantic fantasy series project as writer, executive producer and showrunner. Schaeffer, who also co-wrote the script for Marvel’s The Black Widow, is the top contender for the job, according to those insiders.

Planned as a five-book series, with Fourth Wing and Iron Flame, both released in 2023 along with Onyx Storm (2025) as the first three titles, The Empyrean follows twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail whose military mother forces her to abandon her life as a Scribe to join the Basgiath War College and become a dragon rider in the kingdom of Navarre. She finds herself in a relationship with cadet Xaden Riorsen.

Fourth Wing has spent 88 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, 18 of them at #1. The three books in the series have sold over 12 million copies so far.

In other series news, FX has renewed its Emmy-winning sort-of comedy The Bear for a fifth season. The show’s fourth season just bowed to “incredibly high viewership” according to FX Chairman John Landgraf. Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach headline the series. The fifth season is slated to premiere in 2026.

And finally, Alison Brie (G.L.O.W., Community) has been cast as the lead of FX‘s Untitled Witness Protection pilot from Hannah Fidell and Gina Welch (Clipped), who joins as co-showrunner, writer and executive producer. David Chase was previously set to helm the project, but has stepped back because he is prepping to shoot a new movie.
