Old rock ‘n’ rollers never die: they just languish in obscurity.

Until the opportunity for a reunion tour presents itself, of course. The first trailer for Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, the sequel to This is Spinal Tap, the 1984 mockumentary detailing the career of fictional rock band Spinal Tap, shows the band being brought back together for one last gig, and filmmaker Marty Di Bergi (Rob Reiner) is back to document the event.

The trailer dropped Thursday at San Diego Comic Con and features cameos from Paul McCartney and Elton John, as well as footage from the original movie with scenes of Spinal Tap band members David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest) and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer).

All three band members have fallen on dire straits musically; Derek is a crypto infomercial shill, David plays in a mariachi band and Nigel has a day gig selling cheese, with his only musical outlet rocking out with an Irish folk band.

As for the band’s infamous bad luck with drummers, the trio are seen trying to persuade Questlove to take his chances and become Spinal Tap’s 12th drummer. The first eleven died under unusual circumstances, with the previous one “sneezing himself into oblivion”.

In the trailer, the band is seen consulting with a marketing firm, which urges them to sell branded Spinal tap water, and possibly have one or more of them die on-stage during the concert, to cement their legacy.

Rob Reiner directs, and the cast largely improvised the action and dialogue. From the first movie, Fran Drescher returns as Bobbi Flekman and Paul Shaffer is back as the incompetent record exec Artie Fufkin. Garth Brooks, Questlove, Trisha Yearwood, Chad Smith and Lars Ulrich make cameos as themselves.

Spinal Tap II: The End Continues is exclusively in theaters beginning September 12th.
