No Rest for the Grim Reaper: ‘Bloodlines’ Success Triggers Green Light for Another ‘Final Destination’

Death better sharpen their scythe – soon it will be time to reap the souls of some more unfortunates who are destined to die in elaborate and cinematic ways.
New Line, a division of Warner Bros., saw green when they looked at the box office receipts for Final Destination: Bloodlines, the sixth entry in the delightfully deathly series. Despite waiting until 2025 to revive a franchise that hadn’t put out a movie since 2011, Bloodlines, released in May, grossed over $286 million at the worldwide box office, $138.1 million of that here in the US.
Bloodlines was the most successful outing in the series, so New Line has tasked its co-writer Lori Evans Taylor with scripting the next installment. Craig Perry, who has overseen the entire franchise, will be back in the producer’s chair. All of the movies have done very well for the studio. The concept is extremely portable: a character has a vision of a sequence of events which kills numerous people, then prevents those events from happening, after which Death makes sure the victims die anyway, in grotesque and convoluted circumstances.
Bloodlines sent the series in a new direction, where Death targeted one family in particular, following an incident in which the grandmother, Iris (Gabrielle Rose/Brec Bassinger), had a premonition in the 1960s that saved everyone at a party from a deadly high-rise accident. In the present day, the family members are slowly picked off one by one.
Whether the next film in the series will be related to its predecessor is unknown at this time. No director has been hired, so it is possible that Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein could return to helm the next one. Franchise veteran Tony Todd, who was honored in Bloodlines following his passing, obviously won’t be able to be present in the next film, barring any AI shenanigans.
No production or release dates have been announced for the next film as of now. Final Destination: Bloodlines is currently available to stream on HBO Max and available on DVD.
