It’s Time to Play the Music: Sabrina Carpenter to Host New Muppet Special and Potential Pilot for New Series

You can’t keep a good Muppet down.
Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzy Bear and the rest of the Muppets gang will once again perform for a television (and streaming) audience in a Disney+ variety special that may lead to a new series.
Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg will produce under their Point Grey Pictures banner. Sabrina Carpenter will host the special, which will air next year to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the 1970s The Muppet Show, which ran for 5 seasons in first-run syndication between 1976 and 1981.
The special will serve as a pilot for a potential series. Filming will take place in Los Angeles allowing producers to take advantage of a $1.6M tax credit from the California Film Commission.
The special will be written by Albertina Rizzo and directed by Alex Timbers, who also serve as executive producers alongside Carpenter, Rogen, Goldberg and James Weaver.
Puppeteers Bill Barretta, Dave Goelz, Eric Jacobson, Peter Linz, David Rudman and Matt Vogel will resume their roles as the iconic Muppet characters in this special, joined by additional performers. Goelz has been with The Muppets for over 50 years since the first The Muppet Show. He originated the characters Gonzo and Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, among many others.
The original Muppet Show aired in over 100 countries and featured guest stars popular in their time, including Elton John, Johnny Cash, Diana Ross, Debbie Harry, Gladys Knight, Liza Minelli, Paul Simon and many others. The series earned Emmy, Grammy, Peabody, and BAFTA awards and all five seasons are currently available to stream on Disney+.
The Muppets haven’t been absent from TV in the past 45 years – Disney recently aired the Muppets Haunted Mansion special and The Muppets Mayhem series, and ABC ran The Muppets, a behind-the-scenes look at the production of Miss Piggy’s nighttime talk show, for one season from 2015-2016.
