How do you top yourself when you’ve already been the best you could possibly be?

That’s the question former Beatle Paul McCartney asks himself in the trailer for Man on the Run, a new documentary that looks at the singer/songwriter’s second act after the most famous band in the world broke up in 1970.

“The Beatles had broken up and I was thinking, what do I do now?” McCartney says at the beginning of the trailer. “How can I ever do anything that’s anywhere near as good as The Beatles? I was on my own for the first time. I had to look inside myself, so I put a new band together. I thought, we should start from square one. It was a puzzle I had to unravel.”

McCartney solved his conundrum rather quickly. By 1971, McCartney, with his wife Linda, found success again in Paul’s new band Wings, whose song “Band on the Run” accompanies the trailer.

In a statement, Amazon MGM said, “the film chronicles the arc of McCartney’s solo career as he faces down myriad challenges, creating new music to define a new decade.”

The statement said the documentary would give viewers “unprecedented access to previously unseen footage and rare archival materials” as it seeks to capture McCartney’s “transformative post-Beatles era through a uniquely vulnerable lens”.

Morgan Neville directed Man on the Run, which will air on Prime Video starting February 25th, 2026. For anyone unable to wait until next year to dive into the story, McCartney’s new book on the subject, Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run will be released on November 4th of this year.
