TV for ‘Vendetta’: James Gunn and Peter Safran Adapting the Dystopian DC Graphic Novel for HBO

Is there really a demand for dystopian fiction in these peaceful, untroubled times?
Apparently, there is: the graphic novel series V for Vendetta will be adapted for television by James Gunn and Peter Safran, heads of DC Studios at Warner Bros. They will serve as executive producers along with Ben Stephenson of Poison Pen and Leanne Klein of Wall to Wall Media.
Pete Jackson (not Peter Jackson) will write the series adaptation, which Gunn and Safran will produce. Jackson wrote the Hulu series Somewhere Boy and his TV adaptation of Nick Cave’s The Death of Bunny Munro is set to premiere this month in the UK.
V for Vendetta the graphic novel was published between 1982 and 1985 by DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint. It was written by Alan Moore and illustrated by David Lloyd, and the story focused on an anarchist named V, who always wore Guy Fawkes mask, who tried to subvert and destroy the fascist Norsefire party that controlled Great Britain. His partner in his vendetta was Evey Hammond, a young woman V rescued from the country’s secret police.
In 2005 The Wachowskis produced a film version of V for Vendetta, directed by James McTeigue and starring Hugo Weaving as V and Natalie Portman as Evey.
DC Studios recently adapted The Penguin for HBO, and will be releasing another DC title, Lanterns, as a series next year.
Warner Bros. and DC Studios have yet to comment on the news, so no casting, plot or release date information is yet available.
