Supergirl will fly no more…after her sixth season that is. The CW Network, which has been home to the super series for the last four of the show’s five years, announced today that the sixth season will be the last for the adventures of Kara Zor-El.

The bittersweet news arrived on September 22nd, which comic book geeks like us recognize as the canonical birthday of Supergirl (her Earth-equivalent birthday, anyway.)

The CW confirmed the show will have a full (full, as in 20 episode) season, though production has started later than usual thanks to every show’s Kryptonite, Covid-19, as well as star Melissa Benoist’s pregnancy.

Benoist reacted to the sad, if not totally unexpected news, going to social media to post “to say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement. Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless.”

Supergirl was not exactly a ratings juggernaut, but was firmly woven into the superhero-friendly CW’s lineup.

Supergirl was one of several shows that are part of the ‘Arrowverse’, named for the recently concluded Arrow. The Arrowverse featured a shared universe of shows featuring DC Comics characters like The Green Arrow, The Flash, Batwoman, and Superman and Lois Lane. Characters from The Flash and Arrow crossed over from show to show regularly, such as in last season’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” that saw characters from DC shows and even movies interact for a week-long television event.

That leads to another question – how will the absence of Supergirl affect the rest of the Arrowverse? When Arrow ended, (SPOILER ALERT!) the character of Oliver Queen was killed off. Will Supergirl get the Kryptonite ax as well?

Probably not. The character of Supergirl could still exist and return for random episodes on The Flash or Legends of Tomorrow. (Hey, “Crisis on Infinite Earths” brought back Tom Welling as Smallville’s Clark Kent!) And it’s virtually a given that Kara/Supergirl will turn up on the upcoming CW series about Superman and Lois Lane, which launches in 2021.

Supergirl starts production next week and will launch, like so many other scripted shows, at some time in 2021.
