“I yam what I yam.” says Popeye the Sailor Man. But which one yam you?

You may be wondering that if you too were confused by the news that another trailer for a horror film based on the Popeye IP dropped on Friday. This makes it the third killer sailor movie announced in the past month.

Each one has a different story, a different cast, crew, and overall look, but the plot is the same: Popeye, now in the public domain for anyone to co-opt his character, goes on a murder spree and a bunch of people have to suffer through it.

Friday, Salem House Films released a trailer for their early 2025 release, Popeye the Slayer Man. In that film, according to the official synopsis, “a group of friends sneak into an abandoned spinach canning factory to film a documentary on the legend of the “Sailor Man,” who is said to haunt the factory.”

What a premise!

Popeye the Slayer Man stars Sean Michael Conway, Elena Juliano, Mabel Thomas, Marie-Louise Boisnier, Jeff Thomas, Steven McCormack, Angela Relucio and Sarah Nicklin, with Jason Stephens playing the titular Slayer Man, albeit under some heavy latex effects.

Robert Michael Ryan (Ouija Witch) directs the film from a screenplay by John Doolan (Remains). Jeff Miller (The Toybox), Cuyle Carvin, and Ryan also contributed to the story. The movie is a co-production between Salem House and Millman Productions, Ron Lee Productions, and Otsego Media.

Should that not be enough, earlier this week, the website Bloody Disgusting released pictures and information on Popeye, another, coming from director William Stead and producer Rene August, part of the crew behind a few of the “Poohniverse” horror series (yes, it’s a series now,) so called because the first of the childhood-ruining slasher flicks was called Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey.

Popeye, though, is not part of that universe, though. According to the official synopsis of this “raunchy and gory slasher, “the legend of Popeye haunts a group of counselors as they intend to open a summer camp.”

Stephen Murphy will take on the role of the malformed murderer in this one, which should also be in theaters early next year – possibly as soon as January. There’s no trailer yet, so refer to the image above for a look at this particular Popeye.

Also blowing into theaters early next year, probably in March, to be exact, is Shiver Me Timbers, from Alpake Entertainment. This trailer was released about a month ago, making this Popeye the first in what seems to be a long line of spinach-fueled murderers.

In this iteration of Popeye-as-killer, we get to meet a live-action Olive Oyl that isn’t Shelly Duvall.

According to the movie’s official site, the movie, the story starts, “in Northern California during the summer of 1986, [when] Olive Oyl, along with her cinema- obsessed friends and brother Castor, embark on a once-in-a-lifetime camping trip to witness the dazzling meteor shower accompanying the arrival of Halley’s comet. But what starts as a serene evening of stargazing quickly turns into a harrowing nightmare when a meteor from the comet transforms Popeye, into a terrifying and unstoppable killing machine.”

He IS strong to the finich, after all.

Paul Stephen Mann directs from a script he wrote, with story credit going to Popeye creator E.C Segar. Tony Greer plays Popeye with an assist from David Hallows, Amy Mackie plays Olive, and Brendan Nelson is Castor Oyl.

The three movies, which will be available so close to each other, is a movie marathon in the making, if you’ve got the stomach to sit through three similar sailor slashers in a row. Pass the spinach!
