It was a book first, then a potential streaming show, and now The Final Girl Support Group is headed for the big screen.

The 2021 novel, written by Grady Hendrix, follows a group of “Final Girls” – the term used for the lone female survivor of a slasher movie – as they struggle with life after survival. Playing on tropes associated with popular horror films like the chainsaw killers and summer camp slayers, the book received positive reviews after its release, receiving the Goodreads Choice Award for Best Horror Novel of 2021.

The rights to Final Girl were optioned prior to the book’s release date by Annapurna Pictures, who announced they intended to turn the novel into a television series for HBO Max. Charlize Theron was due to come aboard as Executive Producer, along with Andy and Barbara Muschietti, but those plans fell apart and nothing came of it.

Theron dropped out of the production, and now the rights have been optioned by Paramount Pictures who want Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day, Freaky, Heart Eyes) to both adapt and direct the film. The Muschietti siblings are still attached to the project, and Hendrix will serve as an EP on the film.

Landon has collaborated with Hendrix before; he produced the author’s novel My Best Friend’s Exorcism for Amazon. He also directed Drop, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, and We Have a Ghost.

Paramount is also developing Hendrix’s novella Bad Asstronauts. Hendrix’s books have sold 3 million copies around the world and his novel Horrorstör was a New York Times bestseller. Some of his other books include We Sold Our Souls, How to Sell a Haunted House, and Witchcraft for Wayward Girls. 

As this project is just in development, there are no casting, plot or release dates to share.
