‘Early Edition’ Gets The Reboot Treatment, and No, They Aren’t Replacing the Newspaper with a Twitter Feed
A new rendition of 90s drama Early Edition may have you believing there is a future for newspapers.
The original, which ran on CBS from 1996-2000, starred Kyle Chandler as a man who received tomorrow’s Chicago Sun-Times newspaper a day early and used the information within to prevent a tragedy. Each issue was delivered, or at least accompanied by a ginger tabby cat.
The reboot, if picked up, will also air on CBS, but this one will have a female character receiving the unlikely news, which will still come as a print edition, but the character will be a reporter who is forced into the position of changing the news rather than reporting on it. CBS has only ordered the pilot at this stage.
Along with Chandler, the original Early Edition cast featured Shanésia Davis-Williams, Fisher Stevens, Kristy Swanson, and Billie Worley. The cast for the new show has not been announced yet.
The reboot with a female lead comes from Citadel exec producer Melissa Glenn, DeVon Franklin and Bob Brush, who developed the original. Glenn has written for such series as Hawaii Five-0, Beauty and the Beast and Zoo. She will serve as writer and executive producer.
CBS isn’t the only network revving up the nostalgia machine: ABC is currently reviving LA Law with multiple original cast members returning, while NBC is working on a sequel series pick up the story of Quantum Leap.
