End of a ‘Dynasty’: After ‘Kang’ Movie Scrapped, Would-Be Director Destin Daniel Cretton Swings Over to ‘Spider-Man 4’
The next installment in Sony/Marvel’s Spidey-saga may not have its leading man (or woman) yet, but sources say that a director has been chosen.
Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is in talks to sign on to direct Spider-Man 4: Working Title. (Some reports have said he did sign.)
Cretton was originally a front-runner to direct the next Avengers outing, to be called The Kang Dynasty. But Marvel was forced to retool the film after Kang actor Jonathan Majors was arrested for domestic violence. The Avengers will now assemble under the subtitle Doomsday, with Robert Downey Jr. playing the new big bad, Victor Von Doom.
No cast has been announced for the next Spider-Man franchise film, though, so it isn’t even known who’s playing the friendly wall-crawler. Neither Tom Holland nor Zendaya have signed on for the film yet, but according to Deadline, they are both in touch with the producers and will get to look at potential deals soon.
Jon Watts directed the first three Tom Holland-as-Spidey flicks, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. At the end of No Way Home, a multi-verse mixup that altered his Earth’s timeline left him a stranger to MJ and Ned, who no longer recognized him.
Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Sony’s Amy Pascal will definitely return to produce Spider-Man 4, as will Home trilogy screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. The movie is expected to begin filming early next year.
