Two new movie teasers highlight the fact that no matter what size, be they aliens or mutants, humans are basically defenseless against monsters.

In the ironically-named Hope, coming to theaters in September, the monsters are aliens that are relatively small (only a couple stories tall) but they’re still apex predators, and humans are their preferred prey. The tagline for Hope tells us that “In the remote South Korea village of Hope Harbor, police chief Bum-seok (Hwang Jung- min) and officer Sung-ae (Hoyeon) are called to find a mysterious creature that has wreaked havoc on the village. In the nearby forest, a coterie of hunters, including Sung- ki (Zo In-Sung) set out to track the beast and find themselves hunted instead. But all is not as it seems, and perceptions can be misleading. What begins as ignorance plants the seed of disaster, escalating through human conflict into a tragedy of cosmic proportions.”

In the trailer, we see the puny humans trying to fight back, bringing their guns to a tooth-and-claw fight. They organize hunting parties in the woods and patrol the towns, but the result always seems to be the same: if the creature sees you, you’re dead.

In addition to the cast members already mentioned, Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Taylor Russell and Cameron Britton have small but pivotal roles in Hope.

Na Hong-jin (The Chaser, The Wailing) directed Hope, a big-budget sci-fi spectacle that should hold its own against any kaiju film that might come out later this year. Plus M Entertainment will debut Hope in South Korean cinemas on July 15th, and then Neon will premiere the film in theaters theaters in North America beginning on September 9th.

And speaking of big-budget kaiju spectacle…

Toho released a brief teaser to drum up interest in Godzilla Minus Zero, hitting theaters this November.

But given the massive critical and financial success of 2023’s Godzilla Minus One, the only thing fans really need to know is what date it opens (November 6th). Minus Zero is already one of the most anticipated films of the year. (Source: everyone we know.)

On the off chance you need your memory jogged, Godzilla Minus Zero “picks up in 1949, two years after the tumultuous events of Godzilla Minus One and continues the story of the Shikishima family as they face an all-new calamity. Ryunosuke Kamiki returns as Koichi Shikishima, the hero who stood against Godzilla’s terror in Godzilla Minus One, and is joined by Minami Hamabe as Noriko Shikishima, who miraculously survived Godzilla’s first attack on Tokyo.”

In other words, Godzilla is back and badder than ever. And this time, he’s going to take a bite out of the Big Apple. Writer/director Takashi Yamazaki is ensuring that Godzilla Minus Zero is bigger than ever too: Minus Zero will be the first-ever Japanese production shot entirely in IMAX. Min Tanaka joins the cast, which also includes Hidetaka Yoshioka, Yuki Yamada, Sakura Ando and Miou Tanaka.

Godzilla Minus Zero will be released in Japan on November 3rd, the anniversary of the release date of the original Godzilla in 1954. The film then crosses the Pacific for a North American debut on November 6th.
