If playing Wordle is still your thing, get ready to play along at home when the popular word-guessing game becomes a TV game show.

On Monday, Jimmy Fallon, who hosts NBC’s Tonight show, dropped in to share the news on NBC’s Today show. Sitting on the couch with host Savannah Guthrie, he shared an announcement with the audience.

“We’ve been developing Wordle as a game show for the past two and a half years with the New York Times, and it’s official, we are making Wordle a game show,” Fallon said, before revealing to the audience that Savannah Guthrie herself would be serving as host of the upcoming program.

“We’ve been holding this secret between us for a long time now, and we’re going to make Wordle a game show,” said Guthrie, who had previously said Wordle was her “daily gaming obsession.”

Fallon explained how his production team chose Guthrie, saying, “We were looking, we’re like, ‘Who’s the perfect host for this? We need to have someone that looks like they play Wordle, someone that knows how to run a show and host it.’ And we did the pilot, and you are amazing,” he told Guthrie, later adding that the crew working on the pilot claimed they couldn’t do the show without her.

Wordle first launched in 2021 as a standalone online game. The New York Times bought the rights to the game from its creator, Josh Wardle, the following year four an amount reportedly in the “low seven-figures”. has become a global phenomenon as players try to solve a new puzzle daily. It still boasts over 10 million players monthly.

Guthrie told her audience the show will be “super fast-paced and fun” and a “great family game. I love a game and a show that you can watch with kids and you feel like they’re learning some things.”

Savannah Guthrie has been in the news for an entirely different reason lately; on or around February 1st her 84-year-old mother Nancy Guthrie vanished from her home near Tucson, Arizona and has yet to be found. Foul play is suspected and the case is under investigation by the FBI. Guthrie took an extended leave of absence before returning to her Today Show duties.

Though the show was announced last fall, with Guthrie as the host, her current situation could have led to a longer production delay or even a new host being selected for the show. Guthrie thanked everyone behind the Wordle show for their patience as she dealt with the ongoing horror of her mother’s kidnaping.

“We’ve been working on this for a really long time, and actually we just found out in February that we got picked up and we were supposed to shoot in March. And I just want to say a quick thank you to NBC and to Jimmy and his production company and The New York Times and the studio and Universal because when everything happened with me and my family, they just stopped everything and said, ‘We’ll wait for you.’ And Hollywood is a really tough business, and I didn’t expect that, and I just want to say thank you, it means so much to me.”

Shooting for Wordle the show is to begin this summer, and though there is no official launch date yet, it has been reported that it could premiere in 2027. The production team is now casting contestants. If you want to shoot your shot, click this link.
