Chris Evans returned for the Avengers: Doomsday trailer, finally released on Monday, but is he retaking the mantle of Captain America?

Towards the end of the clip, Chris Hemsworth as Thor confronts Rogers, no longer the elderly man he was when we saw him last in Avengers: Endgame. Thor holds up Mjolnir, which flies effortlessly into Evans’ character’s hand and he grins.

Of course, we are meant to think this is the Steve Rogers we know and love, but with Robert Downey Jr. playing Dr. Doom after years of playing Tony Stark/Iron Man, Marvel could yet surprise us, just as they did when Evans showed up playing an alt-universe Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine. And Anthony Mackie has been Captain America for a while now, so is Steve just a worthy civilian?

Apart from that revelation, the majority of the trailer is given to Thor telling a group of heroes that there’s something coming that’s so bad, it will take a miracle for the combined might of the MCU to prevail against it. Quite the inspiring pep talk. Then we get a series of quick cuts that showcase the star power we can expect in the Avengers’ next adventure.

In addition to Captain America, Thor and Rogers, we see Professor X, Magneto and other X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Shang-Chi, the Black Panther and her Wakandan warriors, the Black Widow, Ant-Man, Loki, and Namor.

We only see the instigator of all the trouble, Dr. Doom, in profile, but he’s there.
