There’s something darker than coal lurking in the depths of the mines beneath the hollows of an Appalachian community.

In the trailer for Dark Hollow, a movie coming to select theaters and On-Demand next month, a young mother must hunt down the creature to protect her home and save her family when a nightmarish monster emerges from the depths of an Appalachian coal mine, according to the film’s official description.

The trailer sets the scene with an explosion on a mountainside and a voice telling us about coal dust falling from the sky like snow as a folk ballad plays in the background. Then we see a miner exploring a dark cavern and finding something strange. When the tunnel down to the mine collapses, no one is willing to do anything – in fact, some people are actively warning against a rescue mission.

One woman decides to rescue the young man anyway, and though she is armed, she is not prepared for the monster prowling under the earth. The action is not confined to the claustrophobic darkness though; later in the trailer we see that very monster in a room somewhere above ground, we can see that the horror was not contained within the mine.

Daniel Byers wrote and directed Dark Hollow, which stars June Shreiner, David Garelik, J. Stephen Brantley, Brennon Weese, Ian Deighan, Jonathan Spivey, Sean Michael Wilkinson, Sharon Murray, Harvey Roberts, Brian O’Neill, Annie Cook, and Radu Spinghel. Brainstorm Media is releasing the film on September 4th.
