Are those Crazy Rich Asians still crazy (and still rich) after all these years?
A new HBO series will catch us up with the beloved (and not-so-beloved) characters from the 2018 critical and fan favorite film and let us know. Also titled Crazy Rich Asians, the series will reunite characters from the film played by Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Ronny Chieng and Michelle Yeoh, in a series that will “delve into the characters and worlds of Kevin Kwan’s brilliant books, according to Adele Lim, who wrote the screenplay for the original movie and is serving as showrunner and executive producer of the series.
In a statement, Lim said, “Getting to work with the original creative team with the support and vision of HBO and Warner Bros. Television has been a dream. Our writers room is humming and we can’t wait to share what we’ve come up with.”
The movie followed Rachel (Wu), a professor who goes with her boyfriend Nick (Golding) to a wedding in Singapore. There she is shocked to discover that Nick’s family is one of the richest families in Singapore, and they don’t approve of her relationship with Nick. Ronnie Chieng played Nick’s cousin Eddie, and Michelle Yeoh portrayed Nick’s domineering and disapproving mother, Eleanor.
The three books in Kwan’s series are Crazy Rich Asians, published in 2013, which was followed by China Rich Girlfriend in 2015 and Rich People Problems in 2017.
In the press statement, Kwan said “Our incredible fans around the world have been patiently waiting for this, and it will be worth the wait! Getting to see my stories and characters come to life with the breathing room of an HBO series is a dream come true, and I am so excited to experience the magic that Adele, Jon, Nina, Brad, our amazing writers and iconic cast will create.”
The film Crazy Rich Asians was directed by Jon M. Chu and grossed over $239 million worldwide over a reported budget of $30 million. It was also a hit with critics, and received nominations at the Critic’s Choice Awards, where it won Best Comedy, Golden Globes, and People’s Choice awards, among many others. The film has a 91% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
No other casting news is available at this time, and no production or release dates are set.
