What happened to Beverly Crusher in the interim between the end of the Star Trek: Nemesis film and her appearance on season three of Star Trek: Picard? A new comic book written by the actress who portrayed her will tell us all about it.

Gates McFadden, who originated the character of Dr. Beverly Crusher on the series Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987, is writing a comic titled simply Crusher, which will fill in the gaps so we can know what her character was up to for all that time. Megan Levans is the artist and Charlie Kirchoff is the colorist working with McFadden on the book, which hails from IDW Publishing.

This is McFadden’s debut as a comic writer. She played Beverly Crusher for 154 episodes of The Next Generation, and after the series ended in 1994, she played the character in the Star Trek movies that followed: Generations, First Contact, Insurrection, and Nemesis. She returned to the Star Trek universe in Picard season three in 2023.

“It’s such an honor to return to Starfleet and expand Beverly Crusher’s storyline in a whole new way,” McFadden said in a statement provided to the press. “I’ve spent years bringing the words of other great writers to life in Beverly’s shoes, so it’s inspiring and thrilling to now be the one scripting a new chapter in this fabulous character’s saga.”

The comic, due out in 2027, is the third title released by IDW to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Star Trek series, which debuted on September 8th, 1966. The first was Star Trek, which came out last month. Writer Christopher Cantwell and artist Dennis Menheere tell the tale of how Captain Seven of Nine brings the Enterprise-G outside the four quadrants of the galaxy and into a space where an unknown force causes time to splinter and manipulates the minds of the crew.

This month, IDW will release Star Trek: Zero Point, about Captain Raffi Musiker who embarks on a mission to prevent future catastrophes, guided by artificial intelligence with a deceptively human face. Hugo and Nebula Award-winning novelist Charlie Jane Anders will write the series.

“IDW’s bold celebration of Star Trek’s 60th anniversary was just the beginning of our stellar plans for the iconic franchise,” said IDW CEO Davidi Jonas in a companion statement. “We are so fortunate to have Gates McFadden beam into the world of comics and reprise her role of Beverly Crusher, but this time as the writer. There is a 20-year gap in the fan-favorite character’s story. Who better to tell it than Beverly Crusher herself?”

Crusher will be available online and in stores next summer.
