The title Twisters might lead one to think that the upcoming movie about tornado chasers is a sequel or reboot of the 1996 film starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, but one would not be correct to do so.

That’s according to Twisters star Glen Powell, who in an interview with Vogue talked about the film, which just wrapped shooting.

“It’s definitely not a reboot,” Powell said in the story, adding “We’re not trying to recreate the story from the first one. It’s a completely original story. There are no characters from the original movie back, so it’s not really a continuation. It’s just its own standalone story in the modern-day.”

Warner Bros. has billed the movie as “a new chapter” to the story begun in the 1996 original, so perhaps the movie is part of the Twister Cinematic Universe.

“I don’t think anyone has brought up this movie in forever, but talking to people, they’re like, ‘That was one of my favorite movies growing up. That movie terrified me,’” Powell said.

The first Twister earned more than $494 million at the box office, globally.

Twisters is directed by Lee Isaac Chung, who was nominated for an Academy Award for Minari. In additioni to Powell, the movie stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Anthony Ramos, Kiernan Shipka, Brandon Perea, Daryl McCormack and Maura Tierney. Mark L. Smith, (The Revenant) wrote the screenplay, and Jurassic World: Dominion producer Frank Marshall plays the same role for Twisters

Plot details for the film, which experienced production delays due to the 2023 writers and actors’ strikes, have not been revealed. Powell did hint at the movie’s themes, though, saying, “humans-versus-weather is a very universal idea, how powerless we really are in the face of these cataclysmic forces.”
