The men and women who throw themselves off buildings, light themselves on fire and otherwise risk life and limb filming movie stunts are finally going to get recognized by the Oscars.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Thursday that they would add Best Stunt Design in time for the 100th annual Oscar ceremony, to take place in 2028. Films released in 2027 would be eligible for the honor.

The award would honor the efforts of everyone in the stunt department and not individual stuntmen and women. On a movie crew, there are often numerous coordinators collaborating on stunts, so the award would recognize everyone involved.

John Wick 4 director and former stuntman Chad Stahelski has been quoted as saying, “the idea of giving an Academy Award for stunt design is awesome – don’t get me wrong. Now I would like to know who’s going to decide who gets it, and who actually gets the award? It’s not like it was 100 years ago when there was one person designing it. It’s a collaborative effort.”

Former stuntman David Leitch, who directed 2024’s The Fall Guy as a tribute to the hard-working crews performing the dangerous and thrilling stunts that audiences love, spent a good deal of time pitching the idea to the Academy. He picked up the crusade from Jack Gill, a stuntman turned second unit director who got into the academy in 1991 specifically to lobby for stunt crews to be honored at awards time.

“It finally happened,” Gill said in a text on Thursday after the Academy made the announcement.

“Stunts are essential to every genre of film and rooted deep in our industry’s history – from the groundbreaking work of early pioneers like Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd and Charlie Chaplin, to the inspiring artistry of today’s stunt designers, coordinators, performers and choreographers,” Leitch said in a statement.

The Emmy Awards and the Golden Globes already recognize stunt coordination, performance and or ensembles.

“We are proud to honor the innovative work of these technical and creative artists, and we congratulate them for their commitment and dedication in reaching this momentous occasion,” Bill Kramer, the Academy’s chief executive, and Janet Yang, Academy president, said in a statement.

Category rules around eligibility and voting for the stunt design award will be announced in 2027.
