The ABCs of Horror: Rob Zombie’s New “Children’s” Book Sparks Outrage From Parents, Amusing Its Author

It isn’t really for kids, folks.
Rob Zombie’s new “children’s” book, Z is for Zombie has apparently fomented outrage against its author, and the movies he’s directed. According to an article published Friday on DailyMail.com, “some parents” are alarmed that the tome, which resembles a Little Golden Book, “teaches children and toddlers to spell using the murderous and terrifying characters from the film.”
The film in question is House of 1000 Corpses, Zombie’s 2003 release that followed two couples on a road trip as they encounter a bizarre, sadistic family of serial killers in the backwoods of – where else – Texas. Bill Moseley, Sheri Moon, Karen Black, Rainn Wilson, Chris Hardwick, Erin Daniels, Jennifer Jostyn, Tom Towles, and Walton Goggins also made up the cast of Zombie’s directorial debut.
The illustrations in Z is for Zombie feature characters from Corpses, characters that also appeared in sequels The Devil’s Rejects and 3 from Hell. Pete Bregman is the illustrator, and the book was released by Neck Bolt Publishing, who have collaborated with Zombie before on The Official Rob Zombie Coloring Book and Grandpa Hugo’s Dirty Jokes.

Some of the parental comments the Daily Mail published include one who asked, “this is an honest question, is it problematic to expose children and glorify characters who are depicted committing murder, torture, sexual assault, body mutilation, necrophilia etc?”
Another wrote, “I’m not giving that to my kid!” while a third added, “If this is ACTUALLY for kids, the author can f**k himself. If it’s for adults, and just a little parody, then kudos.”
The thing is, this book is obviously not for kids. For one thing, it’s 76 pages long. No matter the subject, toddlers are not going to sit down with a 76-page book. And even if it were marketed as a children’s book, parents, of course, are not required to buy it nor read it to their kids.
Zombie seemed amused by the manufactured outrage when he shared the Daily Mail‘s click-generator on his Instagram in response, writing, “Now this is hilarious! We are just trying to teach the children some good book learning ☠️”
Commenters on Zombie’s post were in on the joke, with one saying, “It’s a Rob Zombie book what the fuck did you expect?” said one. “Don’t have kids. Still buying,” another added
Naturally, controversy is reliably good for business, and Amazon ranks Z is for Zombie as number one on the best-selling horror movie and Performing Arts books, and number 40 in Humor, and has entered the top 800 in overall book sales.
