Anthony Hopkins Honors Late Chadwick Boseman in Belated Acceptance Speech
Sunday’s Academy Awards presentation offered a lot to talk about today, from the unusual order of the awards presentation to the historically low ratings, but perhaps the most talked-about moment came at the end, when Anthony Hopkins won the best actor Oscar for his performance in The Father over the late Chadwick Boseman.
The best actor award closed out the ceremony, and Hopkins wasn’t at the event or available via satellite to accept his award, so the show ended on a decidedly anti-climactic note.
Boseman’s loss for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom was, obviously, the last chance for the celebrated actor to receive an Academy Award. Hopkins, apparently under the impression that he wasn’t going to win, recorded an acceptance speech from his home in Wales a few hours after his win.
Hopkins honored Boseman in his speech, hailing his fellow performer as a man “taken from us far too early.”
“Good morning. Here I am in my homeland in Wales and at 83 years of age I did not expect to get this award, I really didn’t. I’m very grateful to the Academy and thank you,” Hopkins said.
“And I want to pay tribute to Chadwick Boseman, who was taken from us far too early and again thank you all very much,” he concluded. “I really did not expect this, so I feel very privileged and honored. Thank you.”
The 83-year-old Hopkins became the oldest actor or actress to win an Oscar, beating out Christopher Plummer’s record supporting actor win at age 82 in the 2010 film Beginners.
Boseman had been expected to win the award for his final film before cancer claimed his life last August at age 43. The Black Panther star had been diagnosed with the disease four years earlier and kept it private as he continued working.
While many on social media are noting Boseman’s loss as a snub, at lease one of Boseman’s family members denies that reality.
Boseman’s brother, Derrick Boseman, told TMZ that Boseman did not have the award stolen from him on Sunday, and while Boseman certainly deserved the Academy Award for his performance, Hopkins was a worthy nomination.
The outlet said the Boseman family wishes Hopkins congratulations for winning the accolade.
Speaking of the dearly departed, the producers of the Academy Awards show decided to do the “In Memoriam” segment as a lightning round, giving each late celeb a quarter second’s screen time (though Sean Connery scored a whole second. And even as it zoomed by, viewers still noted some key players who were omitted, including Naya Rivera, Jessica Walter, Adam Schlesinger and Adolfo “Shabba-Doo” Quiñones.
With any luck, this year will mark a return to “normal” and next year’s Oscar ceremony will follow suit.
