Contest Chaos: Timothée Chalamet Makes Cameo Appearance at His Own Look-Alike Contest; So Do the Police
It was candy-colored chaos at a Timothée Chalamet look-alike contest in Lower Manhattan on Sunday.
Police were called to, and had to shut down, the contest in Washington Square Park after the crowds grew too unruly. Police also cited the organizers for not having a permit for the crowd, a $500 fine. At least one person was arrested at the event, according to the Associated Press, which reported that the police did not disclose the charges, only that they were pending.
According to AP, Paige Nguyen, producer for YouTube personality Anthony Po, who staged the event, told their reporter, “It started off as a silly joke and now it’s turned pandemonium.”
While they apparently did not bother contacting the New York City Parks Department to obtain a permit, the organizers did post flyers for the contest, promoting the $50 grand prize, all around New York, leading to social media speculation and thousands of RSVPs from attendees.
After the police intervention, the group moved the contest to a nearby playground, where a baker’s dozen or so competitors strutted their stuff for the transplanted crowd.
The real Chalamet made a brief appearance at the contest, flanked by bodyguards, though it appears he did not try to enter the event. After posing for pictures with some wannabes, the Dune star left.
With that competition out of the way, a winner was chosen: Miles Mitchell, a 21-year-old Staten Island resident. Mitchell sported the purple outfit Chalamet wore in Wonka and getting further into character, tossed candy to the crowd in his bid for victory.
Mitchell took home the oversized check for $50 made out to “Best Tim” (and, hopefully, a valid, normal-size one too.)
