The breakout star of Bridgerton on Netflix could be the next 007, but you won’t hear him admit that.

Regé-Jean Page, who played the Duke of Hastings on Netflix’s popular period piece, notes that he’s ‘flattered’ to be included among a host of British stars tipped for the iconic role, telling  The Mirror: “Ah, the B word. I think that if you are British and you do anything of note, that other people take notice of, then people will start talking about that.”

As tight-lipped as a super spy ought to be, Page declined to speculate further, saying “Nothing more – or less – than that.”

Page’s casting would be good news to millions of fans who found out recently that the Duke, and therefore Page, would not be featured on the second season of Bridgerton.

The official Bridgerton Twitter account announced Friday that Page would not return for another season. “While all eyes turn to Lord Anthony Bridgerton’s quest to find a Viscountess, we bid adieu to Regé-Jean Page, who so triumphantly played the Duke of Hastings,” the statement read.

Page, who was reportedly offered $50,000 an episode to reprise his character as a guest star in a handful of episodes, declined to pursue film opportunities.

In an interview with Variety, Page said that he was drawn to Bridgerton because the role was a “one-season arc” with a “beginning, middle, end” that allowed him to come in, “contribute my bit and then the Bridgerton family rolls on.”

The actor, who worked on ABC’s two-season legal drama For the People, also a Shondaland production, recently wrapped up some high-profile projects. He’ll appear in the Russo brothers’ Netflix film The Gray Man, opposite Chris Evans, Ryan Gosling and Ana de Armas and will star in Paramount’s big-budget Dungeons and Dragons feature, opposite Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez and Justice Smith.

The character of the Duke was only featured in the first of the novels the Bridgerton series is based on; any additional appearances in the series would have been deviations from the source material.

If you feel like betting on the next Bond, British oddsmakers declared him as the favorite to be the new 007, putting his casting at odds of 5/2, moving previous favorites Tom Hardy and Granchester’s James Norton down to a second-place tie at 3/1. Everyone else who was in the running is now at 10/1 or below.

Rege-Jean, who spent much of his childhood in his mother’s native Zimbabwe, does admit to some enjoyment in the speculation that he could be Daniel Craig’s successor.

“I think the internet thinks a lot of things, and that’s one of the more pleasant ones,” Page said of the speculation during an interview on Jimmy Fallon’s show. “So, I am pleased as far as that goes.”
