James Corden’s Existence Inspires ‘Wicked’ Casting Fears, Change.Org Petition
No one has said James Corden is going to be cast in the upcoming film version of the musical Wicked, but also no one has said he isn’t going to be cast, and that has inspired some, um, non-fans of Corden to start a petition asking that he not be included.
Mikel Miller started a petition at Change.org asking people to sign if they agreed that “James Corden in no way shape or form should be in or near the production of Wicked the movie. (T)hat’s pretty much it. “
As of this writing, over 20,000 people have added their name to the petition.
Corden, who hosts the Late Late Show on CBS, is a TV personality who is either beloved or be-hated, depending on who you ask. He has appeared in multiple screen musicals, including Cinderella, Into the Woods, Cats, and The Prom, and not always to critical acclaim, and his attempt to promote Cinderella involved him literally stopping traffic by humping cars on a busy New York street. He’s still getting roasted for that on social media.
Neither Universal Pictures nor Jon M. Chu, who is directing Wicked, have commented one way or the other, but Broadway actor JJ Nieman is claiming on TikTok that Corden is in the running to play Dr Dillamond, a talking goat who teaches science to Glinda (Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) at school, in the live-action film adaptation of Wicked. And that is enough to inspire some vitriol, or at least some serious distaste at the thought.
Other responses include “James Corden is a menace to musical theater and the entirety of music as we know it” and “We deserve a movie musical without James Corden and Ben Platt.” Ouch.
Of course, the petition could get a million signatures and it wouldn’t affect casting decisions in any way. But keep it going, everyone! You can at least achieve the goal of being one of change.org’s most-signed petitions.
The film is scheduled to begin production next year, and a release date has not been confirmed.
