Fyre Festival 2.0 is definitely happening next month.

Unless it isn’t.

Honestly, the question “is Fyre Festival 2.0 happening?” can only be answered “it depends who you ask. And when. Also, where.” According to organizer Billy McFarland, pictured above on a jet ski enjoying the first Fyre Festival (unlike most of the attendees who found the first event to be a disaster), claimed in a press release issued on Friday that everything was Gucci with the event taking place in Playa del Carmen.

McFarland commented that “FYRE has been working directly with the government of Playa del Carmen (PDC) and their officials since March 5, 2025, to ensure a safe and successful event,” the statement reads. “All media reports suggesting our team has not been working with the government of PDC are simply inaccurate and based on misinformation.”

That was McFarland’s last post on IG. A week earlier, he posted a video of himself saying that the festival was a go as scheduled, and that a recent press conference that took placed at the alleged festival venue had included both the organizers and officials from the Playa del Carmen city government.

He also said he would get into the lineup news…but didn’t mention a single artist.

Playa del Carmen, in a Twitter post, said (in so many words) “Fyre Festival? Never heard of her.”

Translation: “Neither this event nor any event with its name will occur in our city,” the government wrote in the post. “After looking over the information around the situation, we can confirm that there have been no registrations, planning or conditions to indicate that this will happen in our municipality.”

McFarland posted three videos from their press conference, which McFarland did not attend in person, possibly due to travel restrictions McFarland faces due to his status as a convicted fraudster in the criminal charges levied after Fyre Festival 1.0. One of the commenters on the post mentioned that Playa Del Carmen has a ban on music festivals since cartel violence erupted at one in 2017.

Finally, on Sunday, TMZ wrote that “organizers” now admit that the event would not happen in Playa del Carmen, but only because the government is “lying completely,” and posted text messages between McFarland and another event producer where the organizer says about the city government, “they f*cked us.”

“They [the government] posted on X, Instagram etc. giving their blessing and support and then yesterday they say we’ve never heard of them its hilarious.”

The unnamed event producer isn’t holding out hope for them to change their minds, adding, “and at this point we’re not doing any event there and we plan on making it very public and showing all of the evidence.”

Fyre Festival 1.0 is notorious for promising much and delivering next to nothing, and was featured in two “true crime” documentaries, one on Netflix titled Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened, and one on Hulu called Fyre Fraud.

McFarland and paid celeb promoters like Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner promised attendees a posh music festival experience, but offered only cold cheese sandwiches and unfurnished tents on the beach. And it wasn’t only disappointing to the famous guests; local businesses who were promised they would share in the wealth generated by the event found themselves out of their own investment money, and workers hired to help got stiffed as well.

McFarland ended up with a fraud conviction and a six-year prison sentence.

TMZ reports that “this is not the first time Mexican officials have denied Fyre Fest is going down there. It was originally supposed to take place at Isla Mujeres … but the island’s city hall announced in February no permits had been filed for such an event.”

And they also quote the unnamed producer vowing that “We will move it somewhere else,” possibly within the same time frame.
