Golden Globe Nominations: In a Year with Few Movie Releases, Streaming (and Especially Netflix) Dominates
The 2020 pandemic paid off yet again for Netflix, as the streaming service dominated the nominations for the 78th annual Golden Globes.
David Fincher’s Mank and The Crown garnered received six nominations apiece, The Crown receiving more than any other series as The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the award candidates today. Both are historical dramas; Mank is about Herman Mankiewicz, who co-wrote Citizen Kane, and The Crown is a fictional depiction of the life of Great Britain’s Queen Elizabeth.
The Trial of the Chicago 7 followed with five nominations and Schitt’s Creek, which airs on Netflix but was produced for CBC Television also received five nods. Netflix received 42 nominations, or 35 per cent of the total number.
Amazon Studios was the second-most nominated film distributor with ten, while HBO received seven. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm got seven nominations for Amazon and The Flight Attendant on HBO Max received two.
There were several notable productions snubbed in Tuesday’s announcement: Spike Lee’s acclaimed Da 5 Bloods got no nominations at all, despite a stellar performance by Delroy Lindo. The well-received HBO/BBC show I May Destroy You was shut out of the television category.
Chadwick Boseman received a posthumous nod for his performance in the George C. Wolfe adaptation of August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, as did his co-star, Viola Davis. Other acting nominees included Andra Day (The United States vs. Billie Holiday), Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a Woman), Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah), Leslie Odom, Jr. (One Night in Miami), Glenn Close (Hillbilly Elegy); James Corden (The Prom) and the young star of News of the World, Helena Zengel.
Last year there were no female nominees for best director or a best film nomination for any movie directed by a woman, but this year more women than men were nominated, and the most ever for the HFPA. Regina King, Chloé Zhao and Emerald Fennell were nominated for best director, alongside Aaron Sorkin and David Fincher. Zhao is the first woman of Asian descent nominated for best director.
