Legends recognize legends.

So begins the story on the back of the packaging of the Mattel “Kenbassador” doll made in the likeness of singer Lenny Kravitz. Kravitz, known for a string of rock and roll hits dating back to 1989’s “Let Love Rule,” is the first musician and only the second male celebrity thus honored. (The first was athlete/actor LeBron James, whose figure was released last year.)

According to the Mattel website, where the doll is available for purchase, “The Barbie Signature Kenbassadors Collection celebrates influential figures who are creating positive change and contributing to a better world for all! A master of many disciplines, Lenny Kravitz has spent decades defining his own creative world – one where music, fashion, art, and individuality are unmistakably his own. With a decades-long career, he’s racked up hit records, music awards, and a reputation for truly iconic fashion.”

The site features several out-of-the-box images of the doll based on Kravitz, fashioned to be almost as fetching as the person it’s based on. Their site copy says the “wildly cool doll…honors his boundary-breaking spirit and captures a signature look from his ‘Blue Electric Light’ tour in amazing detail, including tattoos, a nose ring, and authentic locs. With his bootleg denim jeans, bronze mesh top, studded belt, and shades, he’s ready to rock as he continues to leave an indelible mark on culture.”

“Barbie is an institution and as a kid growing up, I could not have imagined this. To be chosen by Mattel as a Kenbassador, only the second one in history, is an honor and absolutely surreal,” Kravitz said in a press release announcing the doll on Thursday.

Kravitz, who collaborated with Mattel in the creation of the doll, told People magazine about the outfit selection. “The clothes that the doll is wearing are replications of the clothes that I’ve been wearing on the tour,” Kravitz explains. “We got it down to all the details of the boots and the jeans and the belt with the holes and the rivets and the tops that I’ve been wearing. The glasses are exact replications of the vintage glasses from the late ‘60s that I’ve been wearing. The necklace around the neck was a necklace that belonged to my mother [Roxie Roker] that I wear.”

The Ken doll was introduced in 1961 as a companion to Mattel’s popular Barbie doll, which debuted in 1959. Just as the Barbie doll was named after creator Ruth Handler’s daughter, Ken was named after her son.

The cost of the doll is $70.00 if you buy it on the Mattel website (link above). Once it sells out, the third-party sale price is liable to be much higher.
