Marvel Rakes in the Awards (But for TV This Time) at 2021 MTV Movie and TV Awards
In one of the pre-recorded bits for the MTV Movie & TV Awards, show host Leslie Jones escapes into a version of WandaVision that puts her not into the world of the Dick Van Dyke Show or Bewitched, but into The Jeffersons, Good Times and Family Matters. It’s hilarious, but also foreshadows the degree to which Marvel dominated pop culture this season, at least as far as MTV viewers were concerned.
Jones hosted from the historic Palladium in Los Angeles, and Snoop Dogg served as the evening’s DJ. Sunday night’s show awards were given for films and scripted television while its follow-up show, MTV Movie & TV Awards: UNSCRIPTED, will take place Monday at 9pm EST/PST, and will be hosted by Nikki Glaser.
Marvel shows like WandaVision and Falcon and the Winter Soldier cleaned up the TV-related awards, a boon for Marvel in a year that Marvel didn’t release any movies. (Scarlet Johansson did receive an honor that included her upcoming Marvel release, though.) Elizabeth Olsen, Anthony Mackie and Kathryn Hahn were among the six award-winners from Marvel, which won in every category it was nominated in, including best show for WandaVision.
Scarlett Johansson was honored with the Generation Award for her many roles, including in the forthcoming Black Widow. Sacha Baron Cohen was presented with the Comedic Genius Award, which several of his most iconic characters accepted on his behalf.
To All the Boys: Always and Forever was awarded Best Movie, and the late Chadwick Boseman was honored for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Host Leslie Jones also took home a Best Comedic Performance award for her role in Coming 2 America.
