Own the Car that Inspired Rob Zombie: The Munsters’ Hot Rod “Drag-U-La” Is Going Up for Auction
It’s not just the car that Grandpa Munster drove around Mockingbird Lane. – it’s the inspiration for a Rob Zombie banger.
Zombie is producing a modern-day reboot of the classic TV series The Munsters, but long before that, he showed his love for the monster-friendly sitcom with his hit single “Dragula” which he released in 1998 on his album Hellbilly Deluxe.
The Dragula (or Drag-U-La) is the race car owned by Grandpa Munster (Al Lewis) that was featured in an episode called “Hot Rod Herman”. The aired in 1965 and was a nod to the growing popularity of drag racing at the time.
The coffin-based drag racer was designed by Tom Daniel and built by George Barris for The Munsters. The show was a 1960s TV series about a family of cheerful movie monsters trying to fit into American suburban life.
The car will be offered at the Mecum Auction, to be held in January in Kisssimee, Florida. The Dragula is one of five produced and noted as being the most authentic in existence. It is accompanied by supporting documentation and autographs from Barris Kustoms and stars of the TV show.
To create the car, the creators welded the coffin to a real tubular steel, front-engined dragster chassis. Barris and his team then cut out two sections of the top and fitted a plexiglas bubble. The engine is a 289 cubic inch Ford V8 said to be capable of 350 horsepower and topped by two four-barrel carburetors mounted on a Mickey Thompson Ram-Thrust intake manifold with a pipe organ exhaust.
The Dragula hot rod has no reserve price, but the auction company predicts that it will be very popular.
Zombie is finishing up his film based on the classic sitcom. He built the set of the sitcom’s iconic mansion at the 1313 Mockingbird Lane address on his set in Hungary. No release date has been set yet.
