Who You Gonna Call…For Breakfast? November’s ‘Ghostbusters Afterlife’ Can Be In Your Cereal Bowl Tomorrow Morning
If there’s something weird in your cereal bowl, it might just be the new Ghostbusters cereal.
General Mills has begun stocking store shelves with a new Ghostbusters Afterlife cereal here in the United States. The box sports the official Ghostbusters branding on a black background with one of those busted ghosts peering pensively at you while you eat. The cereal is made up of red spherical corn puffs with white ghost-shaped and blue ectoplasm marshmallows, which is a variation on the original version.
Per a General Mills press release, the Ghostbusters cereal “borrows inspiration from the upcoming movie release which is a continuation of the iconic 80’s flick, premiering later this year. In anticipation for the sequel, enjoy fruity flavored sweetened corn puffs with ghost and ectoplasm-shaped marshmallows. Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!”
Ghostbusters cereal isn’t new, of course; the first ectoplasm-laced breakfast treat came out to promote the 1984 film that launched the franchise. The cereal had the circular red (and yellow) ‘no’ symbol as the main element back then, along with marshmallow ghosts sprinkled in.
The upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife is set decades after the events of 1989’s Ghostbusters II, and focuses on a young family related to a member of the original Ghostbusters team who move to a farm in Oklahoma. They end up encountering and fighting a variety of supernatural threats in their new home as well as exploring their family legacy. The movie is slated for release in November 2021.
Now to the most important question: is it any good? One online reviewer voted no, criticizing the lack of imagination in its design.
“The actual cereal is made of completely generic rounded corn puffs, the least imaginative cereal bits ever created. They’re Kix, and no child or adult in the history of the world has ever been excited to eat Kix. I think they’re supposed to be red to evoke the Ghostbusters logo, except that makes no sense and also they’re not actually red,” complained reviewer Rob Bricken.
Other tie-in food items and collectibles coinciding with this year’s release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife are also on the way, including Twinkies with blue slime cream filling that should hit store shelves this year.
In other cereal news, General Mills is also launching a Galactic Lucky Charms that includes three new magic charms: two planet charms that have the power to duplicate and a new rocket charm that has the power to race through space. Not really, of course, but you can use your imagination.
If that’s not enough and you’re still looking for the next great pop culture breakfast delight, start scanning your cereal aisle in June for the glittery goodness of Kellogg’s ‘Together with Pride’ cereal. The company teamed up with LGBTQ advocacy group GLAAD to make a cereal filled with rainbow and heart-shaped bites, and sprinkled with edible glitter. Kellogg’s announced they will donate portions of their sales from Together with Pride cereal to GLAAD to help aid in their anti-bullying and LGBTQ+ advocacy efforts.
“All are welcome at the breakfast table with our NEW ‘Together with Pride’ cereal coming to shelves soon,” Kellogg’s announced via Instagram, adding that a portion of the proceeds from cereal sales will be donated to GLAAD.
