He hasn’t painted a brush stroke in 25 years, but Bob Ross is still very much a part of our national conversation.

Like his PBS compatriot Mr. Rogers, Bob Ross was a soft-spoken, life-affirming role model that many have embraced as an antidote to today’s onslaught of unhappy news. Now fans have the opportunity to visit the studio where the beloved artist recorded his show.

Ross, known for his relaxed painting tutorials showing all of us how to paint “happy little trees,” recorded nearly every one of the 400+ episodes of The Joy of Painting at WIPB in Muncie, Indiana, near the Ball State University campus, from 1983 through 1994.

“The Bob Ross Experience,” a $1.2 million permanent exhibit in the L.L. Ball house on the campus of the Minnetrista Cultural Center, offers visitors a tour of Ross’ refurbished TV studio and other interactive activities. It opened to the public on Halloween.

The Experience invites guests to “explore the life, philosophy, and art of the iconic American painter inside the historic home where The Joy of Painting was filmed. The immersive exhibit features original paintings and artifacts, inspiring visitors with Bob’s message of fearless creativity.”

Fans get to pose for in-studio pictures in front of Ross’ easel and handle such Ross-ian paraphernalia as his hair pick, a vintage JC Penney shirt he wore for broadcast, and the jar of Vicks VapoRub he used to keep his sinuses clear and his voice velvet-soft.

Visitors can also try their hand at painting à la Ross, with teachers certified in the late artist’s methods. These instructors tutor would-be artistes so they can create landscapes featuring their own “happy little accidents” (which is how the gentle Ross described mistakes.)

A small but ever-changing number of Ross’ paintings will be on display on-site, according to a Minnetrista spokesperson. The only other place the public can view Ross paintings now is at the Smithsonian.

While the exhibit will eventually be open to the general public, for now visitors can purchased timed tickets here.
