DC FanDome Highlights Include First Trailers from ‘The Batman’ and ‘Black Adam’
It would be hard for DC to live up to all the hype for their Saturday Fandome event, but they may just have done so.
The streaming event DC Fandome 2021 gave us sneak peeks at some of the biggest DC movies, TV shows, games and comics coming in the next year. The Batman, Black Adam, Peacemaker, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League (and a lot more) were all in the spotlight during the event, which had trailers, behind-the-scenes featurettes and memorable moments with some of DC stars who shared some never-before-seen surprises.
Here are some highlights from the trailers, announcements and interviews from DC FanDome 2021. You can watch the entire show here.
THE BATMAN
The highly anticipated trailer from the The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, Paul Dano, Colin Farrell and Zoë Kravitz finally dropped, and it looks like the movie, premiering March 4th, 2022, is going to be a dark gritty mystery where the main villain is one we haven’t seen much of on the big screen: The Riddler, played by Dano.
The trailer only gives glimpses of what the movie will be about, but it does show us a lot, including Andy Serkis as Alfred, trying to advice Batman, and Kravitz as an alluring but caring Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman. We also see Farrell’s take as the Penguin, and Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon. Pattinson’s Batman is explosive, both figuratively, from pent up rage, and literally, with bullets and bombs galore.
Director Matt Reeves, along with Kravitz and Pattinson, attended the event to talk about the movie, where Reeves revealed that Pattinson wore Val Kilmer’s batsuit from Batman Forever in a screen test.
PEACEMAKER
John Cena’s Suicide Squad character gets a spotlight on the small screen, with a show coming to HBO Max next year. The first Peacemaker teaser trailer debuted with commentary from Cena, and fans also got a bonus behind-the-scenes look when the Peacemaker cast joined writer and director James Gunn to discuss the upcoming The Suicide Squad spinoff series coming to HBO Max on January 13, 2022.
The series will star John Cena as Peacemaker, along with a wisecracking team of vigilantes, including Danielle Brooks as Adebayo, Freddie Stroma as Vigilante, Jennifer Holland as Harcourt, Steve Agee as Economos, Chukwudi Iwuji as Murn and Robert Patrick as Peacemaker’s dad, Auggie Smith. However, according to all of them, it’s Peacemaker’s pet bald eagle, Eagley, that steals the show.
The trailer makes the show look all kinds of fun, like an action movie/music video, with fists, falls, underwear dancing, and yes, a pet eagle that gives hugs.
AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM
Jason Momoa was on hand to introduce the sequel to his superhero debut, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, due out December 16, 2022. He shared an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip that featured some compelling (and surprising) concept art, including some giant grasshoppers and desert creatures, the kind all good aquatic movies have. Director James Wan promised a globetrotting adventure that “isn’t afraid to embrace its fantasy.”
Fans also got a look at the animated three-part special event Aquaman: King of Atlantis, including a clip from the second episode. The debut episode is available now on HBO Max.
DOOM PATROL
Star Matt Bomer talked about the upcoming fourth season of the HBO Max Original series Doom Patrol will return for a fourth season and debuted a trailer for the second half of season three. Doom Patrol stars Brendan Fraser, Bomer, Diane Guerrero, April Bowlby, Joivan Wade, Timothy Dalton, Skye Roberts and Michelle Gomez, and this season has featured sororities and fraternities like of the Sisterhood of Dada and the Brotherhood of Evil. With only four episodes left, the Doom Patrol season three finale is scheduled for Thursday, November 11th.
THE SANDMAN
DC gave fans an anticipated first look at Gwendolyn Christie (Game of Thrones) as Lucifer Morningstar, complete with imposing black wings, in poster art. Fans should have already seen the clip from the show featuring her former GoT co-star Charles Dance summoning something demonic in the new Netflix adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s beloved comic.
SHAZAM: FURY OF THE GODS
Though this doesn’t come out until 2023, there’s no time like the present to hype Zachary Levi’s second outing as Shazam. DC took fans behind the scenes with Asher Angel and Levi to show fans what they can expect from the sequel to 2019’s Shazam, namely bigger action, more exotic sets, a plot that delves heavily into mythology and a powerful duo of villains played by Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu.
BLACK ADAM
Yet another trailer revealed a first look at Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam, the anti-hero who was originally supposed to be part of the Shazam universe before he scored his own movie. This film will introduce the Justice Society of America, including Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman and Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate. The movie drops July 29th of next year.
SO MUCH MORE
This barely scratches the surface of the fun of FanDome, which also revealed looks at the Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League video games, the costume updates for Blue Beetle and The Flash (CW), looks at Young Justice: Phantoms, Injustice, Catwoman: Hunted, the Batgirl movie and many, many more properties than we have time to name.
