Mercilessly (and Hilariously) Mock Bad Movies for Fun and Prizes with New ‘RiffTrax: The Game’
No more getting shushed in the theater when you heckle a terrible movie; now you can mock movies like Plan 9 from Outer Space from the comfort of your home, all while competing with all your friends to be the best at movie snark.
RiffTrax: The Game is a new interactive social gaming take on bad movie commentary from RiffTrax and Wide Right Interactive gaming. RiffTrax is an offshoot of Mystery Science Theater 3000, which riffed bad movies for ten seasons on Comedy Central and Syfy before being revived by Netflix in 2017. The show is currently streaming new episodes on its own platform.
RiffTrax consists of three riffers, Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett, who preside over some of the worst cinematic offerings known to man (look up Birdemic, for just one example) and punctuate the flat dialog and lame special effects sequences with cutting commentary. The group formed in 2006 and offer downloadable content as well as in-theater experiences a few times a year, when there isn’t a pandemic.
Wide Right Interactive already has a similar game called What the Dub, in which the players fill in missing dialogue in video clips to see who can get the most laughs. RiffTrax: The Game will launch May 5th on Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.
The game includes selections from RiffTrax’s library of cinematic catastrophes, including clips from movies like Rollergator, Attack of the Supermonsters, and Plan 9 from Outer Space. The RiffTrax writing team will contribute pre-written jokes for players who need a hand being funny, or players can write their own.
Wide Right is also building RiffTrax for social play and livestreaming, with features like remote games, crossplay, and voice chat. With remote play, anyone with an internet-connected device can participate from anywhere. And like other recent social party games like Jackbox, broadcasters can include their audiences in the games.
Also included are Twitch integrations, allowing users to include their whole chat in the action with Twitch Chat voting, additional moderation, privacy, and content tools.
