The great movie migration is still on.

Sony Pictures has pushed back the premiere date of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, starring Tom Hardy. The movie, formerly scheduled to be released on September 24th, will now debut on October 15th.

This pits it against the scheduled release date of Blumhouse’s Halloween Kills, and also frees up the September 24th date in case Sony wants to reschedule the release of the animated Hotel Transylvania 4, starring Adam Sandler.

With concerns over the delta variant, and kids under 12 still not being allowed to be vaccinated, the animated movie’s theatrical fate remains in question. The fourth movie in the franchise is scheduled to debut on October 1st, but Sony is currently mulling over alternate dates and strategies, including streaming, according to Variety.

COVID-19 cases are skyrocketing in the U.S. and the surge has once again led to a decline in consumer confidence in returning to the movies. According to a recent survey conducted by the National Research Group, 67% of moviegoers say they’re “very or somewhat comfortable” visiting their local multiplex — which is a dip of 3% compared to last week, and down 14% from one month ago.

This marks the third time the Venom sequel’s premiere date has been moved. Originally, the sequel was slated for October 2020, before being bumped to June 2021, then to September. Sony is committed to keeping a theatrical release for the film.

Is this an abundance of caution? Even with the bad news of Covid variants affecting young people, Disney’s Dwayne Johnson Jungle Cruise movie had a better than expected second weekend hold of -55% last weekend; plus that movie also beat opening weekend projections two weeks ago with $35M. But things are widely perceived to be getting worse this month.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is directed by Andy Serkis. The original was a surprise box office smash, generating $855 million at the global box office. The sequel stars Woody Harrelson, Michelle Williams, Reid Scott and Naomie Harris.
