In the beginning, there was Barbie.

The sly new trailer for Barbie, Greta Gerwig’s cinematic tribute to the iconic fashion doll, shows Margot Robbie perfectly done up as the first version of the doll that started it all, with permed bangs, strapless striped one-piece, sassy white sunglasses, and of course, high heels.

The brief trailer is a frame-by-frame homage to the monolith scene in Stanley Kubrick’s sci-fi masterpiece, 2001: A Space Odyssey. Dame Helen Mirren narrates as we gaze upon a prehistoric landscape where young girls are playing with dull, unfashionable baby dolls. As the strains of “Thus Spoke Zarathustra” begin to play, the girls look up to see the monolithic (and statuesque) figure of a whole new kind of doll, and it’s game over for the babies.

The rest of the trailer gives us only brief glimpses of the actual movie: Barbie gazing over her pink plastic world, Ken (Ryan Gosling) posing in workout clothes with Kingsley Ben-Adir and Ncuti Gatwa, President Issa Rae in a pink jumpsuit, a stylish dance number featuring Simu Liu, and a glammed-up Babs doing her own song and dance spectacular.

The movie, which hits theaters in the summer of 2023, was co-written by three-time Oscar nominee Gerwig working with Noah Baumbach. Gerwig directs the film which also stars Kate McKinnon, America Ferrera, Will Ferrell, Michael Cera, Nicola Coughlan, and Emerald Fennell, among a massive ensemble cast.
