A Devilish Duet: The Joker and Harley Take Their Chaotic Show on the Road in New Trailer for ‘Folie à Deux’
The new trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux makes the film look like a cross between Natural Born Killers and The Sonny and Cher Show, mixing mayhem with music.
The trailer opens with Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) on his way back to Arkham Asylum in a paddy wagon, seemingly happy with his prospects. Once there, he strikes up a friendship/romance with Harleen Quinzel (Lady Gaga), a fellow patient who has a penchant for the piano. (She also sings, natch.)
The pairing is a a win for both of them, if that’s what you want to call it. Harley feeds the Joker’s madness, and as for her, she’s finally found an antidote to her enforced solitude.
“When I first saw Joker, when I saw you, for once in my life, I didn’t feel so alone anymore,” Harley says in the preview before shattering a store window and stealing a television set that had previously been broadcasting Fleck’s face.
In the film, Fleck is on trial for the crimes he committed in the first film, 2019’s Joker. Fleck is certainly out of order – to the point where he’s bashing in the judge’s head with a comically large gavel.
Joker was nominated for 11 Oscars, with star Joaquin Phoenix winning best actor and Hildur Guðnadóttir for original score. It became the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history. Todd Phillips, who wrote, produced and directed Joker, returns for the sequel.
Toward the end of the clip we see that Harley and the Joker have their own variety hour, a la 70s television staples like The Donny and Marie Show or Sonny and Cher’s musical/sketch comedy hour.
“I got this sneaking suspicion that we’re not giving the people what they want,” Arthur says. Harley Quinn comforts him, saying, “It’s OK, baby. Let’s give the people what they want.”
We also get to hear some of the songs from Folie à Deux including “When You’re Smiling (The Whole World Smiles With You),” “For Once in My Life” and “Get Happy.” Lady Gaga served as the film’s musical consultant.
Zazie Beetz reprises her role as Sophie from the original, and Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland and Harry Lawtey also star.
Joker: Folie à Deux opens only in theaters on October 4th.
