‘Ant-Man’ Finds Marvel Universe’s Next Big Bad In A Very Small Place In First Trailer For ‘Quantumania’
Things look bad for the super-bugs in Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania.
In the first trailer for the film, which hits theaters on February 17th, 2023, Scott Lang’s (Paul Rudd) daughter Cassie (Kathryn Newton) has developed a beacon that’s capable of signaling the Quantum Realm, the dimension where Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) was imprisoned for decades while her husband, Hank (Michael Douglas) and daughter Hope aka The Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) thought she was lost forever.
It turns out that was not a great idea. Just as Janet tells Cassie to shut off the beacon, the entire family unit is zapped into the realm, with no way for them to return. There’s more to the realm than we ever found out about in the first two movies, however, and that includes flying manta ray-type creates, giant spiders with a killer bite, a massive city guarded by a formidable army, and Bill Murray. (Murray’s character has not yet been revealed.)
Even worse, Ant-Man and company run into the next major threat to the MCU: Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors) last seen in the Season 1 finale of Loki (but in one of his other mulitverse identities.) Kang offers them a way out, but there appear to be strings attached. “I can get you home,” says Kang. “And give you more time — if you help me. So, what’s it going to be Ant-Man?”
If we time travel ahead in the MCU timeline, we get to the release of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty in 2025, so we are probably seeing the opening gambit of that dynasty here. This Kang more closely resembling the Conqueror as seen in the comics, which leads many to speculate that he’s here via time travel. Kang isn’t an Ant-Man villain, so this may just be a stop on the road to his battles with other Avengers.
Quantumania will be followed by Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Marvels as Phase 4 finishes, setting us up for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars in Phase 5.
