Warner Bros. finally confirmed that the studio is revisiting a trio of franchises it launched in the 1980s.

On Friday, during an interview with Deadline, Warner Bros CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy said that reports circulating since January of this year were true: new films in the Gremlins and Goonies movie series are no longer wishful thinking; they are happening.

Gremlins came out in 1984 and Gremlins 2: The New Batch was released in 1990. Both were directed b y Joe Dante. The Goonies, which starred Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, and Ke Huy Quan came out in 1985.

Abdy said in the interview, “We’re super excited about Amblin developing with Chris Columbus new entries in the Gremlins and Goonies franchises.” Columbus wrote the original script for Gremlins and The Goonies.

Back in 2017, Chris Columbus said in an interview that he had written a script for a new Gremlins movie that he was really proud of. “It is as twisted and dark as anything, so we’ll see. It’s always a budgetary conversation when we’re going to shoot it. I wanted to go back to the really twisted sensibility of the first movie. I found that was a very easy place for me to fall back into and start writing again so hopefully we’ll see that movie soon,” he said.

Abdy and De Luca didn’t disclose anything more about the Goonies sequel, but did disclose that the studio is currently developing sequels for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and the now-in-theaters Minecraft movie.

On top of that, Warner has Andy Serkis’ Gollum film, a new Matrix script written by Drew Goddard, and a reimagined version of the Whitney Houston/Kevin Costner blockbuster The Bodyguard in the works.

No release dates or casting announcements have been made as these projects are still in the script and storyboard stage as of now.
