Before the Throne: ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ Teams Up Beyoncé, Blue Ivy, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Donald Glover and More
Mufasa wasn’t born to be king, but he was in the right place at the right time.
In the teaser trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King, we see Mufasa as a young cub, getting into the sort of trouble his son Simba would one day be known for. The official film synopsis from Disney reads, “Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka—the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny—their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe.”
Mufasa will be voiced by Aaron Pierre while Kelvin Harrison Jr. voices his bad-seed brother, Scar. It was also revealed today that Blue Ivy Carter will make her film debut voicing Kiara, daughter of King Simba and Queen Nala, while mom Beyoncé Knowles-Carter will reprise her role as Nala from the 2019 sort of live-action Lion King.
Also returning to their Lion King roles are John Kani as Rafiki, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, and Donald Glover as Simba. New cast members include Tiffany Boone as Sarabi; Kagiso Lediga as Young Rafiki; Preston Nyman as Zazu; Mads Mikkelsen as Kiros, a formidable lion with big plans for his pride; Thandiwe Newton as Taka’s mother, Eshe; Lennie James as Taka’s father, Obasi; Anika Noni Rose as Mufasa’s mother, Afia; and Keith David as Mufasa’s father, Masego.
The film, directed by Barry Jenkins (Moonlight), features original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, with additional music and performances by Lebo M.
The Lion King movies have proved to be great critical and financial successes: The 1994 animated original grossed $960 million worldwide, and the 2019 CG version did even better; taking in $1.6 billion. It also was named one of Variety‘s critics picks of that year.
Mufasa: The Lion King will roar into movie theaters on December 20th.
