There could be a new Captain in town before too long.

Malcolm Spellman, head writer and creator of the Falcon and the Winter Soldier series on Disney+, is developing a fourth installment of the Captain America franchise along with writer Dalon Musson, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

There’s been no official word about the cast for the project, but there are rumors that the new movie would focus on Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, leaving Chris Evans’ suspected return as Steve Rogers as a possibility for a different project.

The last time we saw Steve Rogers, he was an old man who decided to live out his full life after traveling back in time. Rogers didn’t make an appearance in FatWS, though his character was mentioned several times and his legacy was a presence in and of itself.

Falcon wrapped its first season on Friday, and that episode offered a few different directions for the feature to take. Chris Evans has been the only feature film Captain America, appearing in a trio of solo movies, Avengers outings, and assorted other Marvel films. However, the new series raised the question of who is entitled to carry the shield or the title of Captain America.

The new installment could continue the story of Sam Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie, who (here be spoilers!) is the current wielder of the shield. No director has been attached to the project. There is also no word on whether the movie will feature Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier.

Spellman’s show was a unique direction for the Captain America story, focusing on not just good vs. evil, but at larger social issues like what to do about displaced populations and America’s horrifying history of experimentation on Black people. He assembled a nearly all-Black writers room for the series, and received praise for bringing their experiences to the forefront. There is a good possibility that social justice stories could be central to the new Captain America movie.
