Coming to a Theater Near You: Amazon’s ‘Jack Ryan’ and Dark Horse’s ‘Emily the Strange’ to Get Big Screen Adaptations
Two literary characters, first seen more than 30 (or even 40) years ago are to be the subject of new films.
The first, Jack Ryan, has already been the subject of many a movie since writer Tom Clancy first wrote about him in The Hunt for Red October in 1984. He’s been played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine on the big screen and now John Krasinski will get a feature-length turn as the CIA analyst and one time President of the United States.
Of course, this isn’t Krasinski’s first time playing Ryan; from 2018-2023 he essayed that role in the Amazon Prime streaming series Jack Ryan. But Krasinski and Amazon are not ready to give up on the character.
Amazon MGM Studios is developing a new feature film starring Krasinski. Wendell Pierce, who played James Greer, Ryan’s boss, in the series, also will star, and Michael Kelly is in negotiations to reprise his role as Mike November, a CIA station chief stationed in Venezuela.
Andrew Bernstein will direct from a script by Aaron Rabin. Bernstein served as an executive producer and director on season two of the series. Rabin was co-executive producer and a writer on season four.
One character who has never graced the theaters is Emily the Strange. She has been featured in several comic books, graphic novels and in various merchandise and clothing lines, though. Emily was created by Rob Reger for his company Cosmic Debris back in 1991 as a mere merchandising image before being featured in several graphic novel series.
The film will be animated, and will come from Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot productions. Pamela Ribon (Moana) will write the script. Bad Robot is producing alongside Reger, with Trevor Duke-Moretz serving as Executive Producer.
Emily the Strange began her life as an image on skateboards, stickers, and t-shirts, before seeing her brand expand into a multimillion-dollar universe of characters, books, comics, games, clothing and merchandise. The color palette is exclusively black, white and red and Emily’s known for her wry observations about society.
According to the official description, “Emily and her four black cats represent a raw, punk rock, independent spirit that has resonated with millions of fans around the world. The mischievous and sharp-witted Emily subscribes to the D.I.Y. philosophy of “think for yourself, do it yourself, be yourself,” and encourages her many followers to be all they can’t be, get lost in imagination, and stay strange.”
Emily has been featured in four HarperCollins novels, four graphic novellas published by Chronicle Books, and a 27-issue Emily the Strange comic book series published by Dark Horse Comics, which was a New York Times Bestseller.
There is no word on when either the Emily the Strange movie or the feature length Jack Ryan will be premiering.
