Deadpool is now officially an Avenger.

Ryan Reynolds’ foul-mouthed mercenary is officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe,  Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed today in an interview with Collider.

Feige said Deadpool 3 “will be rated R and we are working on a script right now…(but) it will not be [filming] this year. Ryan is a very busy, very successful actor. We’ve got a number of things we’ve already announced that we now have to make, but it’s exciting for it to have begun. Again, a very different type of character in the MCU, and Ryan is a force of nature, which is just awesome to see him bring that character to life.”

Marvel’s production dance card is rather full at the moment, as they are currently filming both Thor 4 and Spider-Man 3. This year the studio will also begin filming Doctor Strange 2Black Panther 2, and Captain Marvel 2 (official titles to be announced later.)

Feige said sisters Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin and Wendy Molyneux are hard at work on the script with Reynolds overseeing. Reynolds reacted to Feige’s announcement with typical sarcasm.

Wade Wilson was initially part of Fox’s X-Men universe, so it’s not certain how he’ll be integrated into the MCU for Deadpool 3. Most likely it will be explained by some sarcastic fourth wall-breaking typical of the character.

There’s no word if any of the supporting characters from the first two Deadpool movies, like Morena Baccarin’s Vanessa and Karan Soni’s Dopinder will be back for Deadpool 3, and of course, the studio hasn’t announced which Marvel characters will be appear on screen with Deadpool.

After many delays, the Marvel movie machine will be back in business this year, if things go according to plan. The next installment in the MCU is Black Widow on May 7th, and on television, you can watch WandaVision on Disney+ starting January 15th.
