The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

So the saying goes, but how it works out in the ‘real’ world is the test, or at least it is in the latest Sonic the Hedgehog outing. In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the little blue guy’s arch-nemesis Shadow the Hedgehog, voiced by Keanu Reeves of all people. Here’s the official description.

“Sonic the Hedgehog, his former enemy Knuckles, and Sonic’s loyal friend Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance from Doctor Robotnik in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.”

In the trailer, when the Sonic team approach Robotnik, he’s en deshabille and must shave his messy mop of hair and dress in something besides a dirty wife-beater.

So it’s Sonic (Ben Schwartz), Knuckles (Idris Elba), Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), and Robotnik vs. Shadow, a formidable and somewhat soulless force indeed, if the trailer is anything to go by.

Jeff Fowler returns to direct the Paramount Pictures product, which also stars James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, Adam Pally, and Lee Majdoub, along with newcomers-to-the-franchise Alyla Browne and Krysten Ritter.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 speeds into theaters on December 20th.
