The Black Canary will sing again.

Jurnee Smollett, who starred as Black Canary in Birds of Prey, will headline her own movie as the crime-fighting songbird. HBO Max is in early development on a Black Canary solo film starring Smollett and written by Lovecraft Country‘s Misha Green, as reported by Cinelinx.

Both Green and Smollett have said in the past that they’d be up for the project. The duo worked together on the HBO Max show Lovecraft Country. HBO Max did not pick up the show for a second season, despite the fact that it attracted a dedicated viewership and strong critical praise during its run last fall. Smollett is currently nominated for an Emmy in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress for her performance on the series. Green also scored a nomination in Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series.

Birds of Prey, while not a strong performer at the box office — it grossed only $201.8 million worldwide when released in February of 2020 — did generate fan interest and was well-receive, overall.

The project was just announced so there are no details about the story as of yet. The Black Canary, who is the alter ego of either Dinah Laurel Lance or Dinah Drake, is a long-standing DC character, created in the late 1940s. Since the 1960s, she has been romantically involved with the Green Arrow and is known for her ear-splitting canary cry. On The CW show Arrow, the characters Dinah Laurel Lance, Sara Lance and Dinah Drake all took on the Canary persona. She’s also Barbara Gordon’s best friend and helps her lead the superhero team Birds of Prey.

Canary now joins the growing collection of DC properties that HBO Max is turning into movies. This includes the recently announced films starring Leslie Grace as Batgirl and Xolo Maridueña as Blue Beetle, as well as a series from Michael B. Jordan focused on a Black Superman.

When Lovecraft Country‘s second season was nixed, Green got busy on other projects, including The Mother, an action thriller starring Jennifer Lopez now in pre-production at Netflix, and her directorial debut on a Tomb Raider movie project that she will also write.
