The live-action How to Train Your Dragon really nails the look of the 2010 animated feature – right down to the actor playing lead character Hiccup.

Universal Studios has released the first trailer for its live-action take on HtTYD, after the popular DreamWorks Animation trilogy. The animated film, released by Paramount, featured Gerard Butler as the voice of Stoick the Vast, and he returns to play that character in the live-action version.

Mason Thames, a virtual dead ringer for the animated Hiccup, will play the young dragonmaster in the live-action film. Nico Parker plays Astrid, Nick Frost is Gobber the Belch, and Julian Dennison will play Fishlegs Ingerman. Bronwyn James and Ruth Codd also star.

Dean DeBlois, who co-wrote and co-directed the animated film, here tackles both roles unaided. Composer John Powell also returns.

As in the animated film, the story follows a young Viking named Hiccup, who lives in a kingdom that fears (and hunts) dragons. When Hiccup refuses to kill a dragon as ordered, the friendship that forms between Hiccup and Toothless, a black dragon that is part of the Night Fury species, challenges the worldview of his community. The How to Train Your Dragon series of films is based on Cressida Cowell’s book series of the same name.
