End of an Era? Tom Holland Says ‘No Way Home’ Might Be the Last We See of Spider-Man…For a While
Say it isn’t so.
Could Spider-Man: No Way Home be the last we see of Tom Holland’s web-slinger for now…or forever?
Holland spoke with Entertainment Weekly, where among other things he said that the cast and crew of his upcoming third solo movie outing as Spider-Man are treating this film as “the end of the franchise.”
Holland told EW that if(!) his run of solo Spider-Man films were to continue, they would look a lot different than the three he’s starred in so far.
“I think if we were lucky enough to dive into these characters again, you’d be seeing a very different version. It would no longer be the Homecoming trilogy,” Holland said. “We would give it some time and try to build something different and tonally change the films. Whether that happens or not, I don’t know. But we were definitely treating [No Way Home] like it was coming to an end, and it felt like it.”
Holland has played the wall-crawler numerous times, both in the three Spider-Man solo movies (Homecoming, Far from Home and No Way Home) as well as in ensemble projects Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Neither of the previous iterations of Spider-Man got more than three movies, though that was before Sony allowed the wall-crawler to cross over to the MCU.
Holland also told the mag that the last day on set with costars Zendaya (MJ) and Jacob Batalon (Ned) was very emotional.
“We’ve been making these films for five years now,” Holland said. “We’ve had such an amazing relationship, the three of us. We’ve been with each other every step of the way. We’ve done every single film, every single press tour. So this one scene, [we didn’t know] if this would be the last time [we were all working together.] [It] was heartbreaking but also really exciting because we’re all moving into the next chapter of our careers. So sharing that moment with them was maybe the best day I’ve ever had on set. I don’t think I’ve cried like that ever.”
In the interview, the actor didn’t reveal any previously unreleased plot details, but the film’s trailer has hinted at character crossovers from various Spider-Verses, mixing elements from earlier films starring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. We do know that Spidey goes to Dr. Strange, who casts a spell that rewrites reality as they (and we) know it.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is in theaters on December 17th.
