Ethan Coen Flies Solo In Off-Beat Lesbian Road Trip Comedy ‘Drive-Away Girls’ From Focus Features
Imagine if Thelma and Louise were lovers, and you have a hint as to what Ethan Coen’s upcoming feature Drive-Away Girls is about.
Hopefully, Jamie (Margaret Qualley) and Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan) meet a happier ending than their foremothers, but it will be a bumpy ride. The film follows the two friends (and maybe lovers?) as they impulsively leave Pennsylvania and head to Tallahassee in hopes of a fresh start. Things quickly go sideways after the two end up taking a car that wasn’t meant for them and find themselves on the run from a group of inept criminals who want what’s hidden in the trunk. Their adventure sends them to some seedy and unusual places, where they encounter even more weirdness, like a mystery briefcase and an evil politician.
Could romance bloom along the way, even as the two are motoring to Florida in a car marked with the inscription “Love is a sleigh ride to Hell,” and Jamie says she doesn’t believe “love is relevant to the 21st-century lesbian”? You’ll have to go along for the ride to find out.
The film also stars Beanie Feldstein and Pedro Pascal along with Matt Damon, Bill Camp, Colman Domingo, Annie Gonzalez, and Joey Slotnick and Miley Cyrus.
Drive-Away Dolls marks the first non-documentary film that Ethan Coen has helmed solo without his longtime co-director (and sibling) Joel, but even solo, the movie promises the combination of absurd comedy, violence and inept criminals typical of earlier Coen Brothers films.
Ethan Coen said the brothers decided to go solo because they were burnt out after the difficult process of shooting The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. Ethan directed the rock documentary Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind in 2022.
Coen kept the business of making this movie in the family, though, co-writing the original script with his wife, Tricia Cooke. Drive-Away Dolls from Focus Features and Working Title will cruise into theaters on September 22nd of this year.
