Evil has to start somewhere.

20th Century Studios released a trailer on Wednesday for its prequel The First Omen, an origin story of sorts for the demon child Damien, first seen in 1976’s The Omen. The trailer has a lot of religious iconography and locations, and eerily, all the footage is played in reverse.

In The First Omen, accorcing to the official synopsis, “a young American woman (Nell Tiger Free, Servant, Game of Thrones) is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church, she encounters a darkness that causes her to question her own faith and uncovers a terrifying conspiracy that hopes to bring about the birth of evil incarnate.”

That evil incarnate, we assume, is Damien, the hellspawn in the franchise’s first film. In that movie, Gregory Peck plays an American diplomat in Rome who replaces his stillborn child with a newborn orphan at the request of a priest (and without the knowledge of his wife). That child, named Damien, turns out to be the Antichrist.

The first movie inspired many other iterations, including three theatrical sequels, a 2006 remake, a failed TV pilot, and the one-season A&E seriesĀ Damien. The First Omen is yet another 1970s horror franchise being revisited in the 2020s, joining The Exorcist and Halloween as IPs that have been dusted off and presented to a new generation of filmgoers.

Tawfeek Barhom (Mary Magdalene), Sonia Braga (Kiss of the Spider Woman), Ralph Ineson (The Northman), and Bill Nighy (Living) also star in the film.

The First Omen is directed by Arkasha Stevenson, who wrote the script with Tim Smith from a story by Ben Jacoby. David Seltzer is credited with creating the characters the movie is based on. David S. Goyer and Keith Levine produced the film.

Expect The First Omen to spawn in theaters on April 5th.
